The Genre Encyclopedia is the core reference section of The DJ Diaries: 56 genre profiles covering every major sound in electronic dance music, from the Chicago house of 1984 through to the global scenes of the present day. Each profile includes origin date, geographic roots, key artists, essential recordings, and the cultural context that made the sound possible.

The encyclopedia is organized by genre family: the House family, the Techno family, the Drum and Bass and Jungle family, the Garage and Dubstep family, and the dozen other lineages that connect the full history of the music.

The full genre archive is part of the Genres & History section. New profiles are added on the editorial schedule.
