The Feeling Factor series has been running since I was in middle school, which means by volume 46 it’s developed its own accumulated logic. Each one is a snapshot of where I am musically at a specific moment — what I’ve been listening to, what’s been working in sets, what’s been sitting in the library waiting for the right context. This is the series where I don’t overthink the selection. I just play what feels right.

Vol. 46 is jazzy, deep, and soulful, which are three words that get overused as genre descriptors but that I mean specifically here. Jazzy in the sense of harmonic complexity that goes beyond the standard house chord palette. Deep in the sense of emotional depth and unhurried tempo, not just sonic heaviness. Soulful in the old sense — music that carries a feeling through the performance rather than just through production polish.

St. Germain’s “Rose Rouge” featuring Robert Owens and Pete Tong sets the tone early: the combination of jazz-inflected production with Robert Owens’ gospel-influenced voice is something that still sounds extraordinary twenty-plus years on. Radio Slave’s “Strobe Queen” in Eric Kupper’s remix takes the house energy somewhere more contemplative. Ben Westbeech’s “Something for the Weekend” is one of those tracks that’s been in my sets for years and shows no signs of going anywhere. Kings Of Tomorrow’s “Vibes” is exactly what it says it is.

There’s also a version of Joe Cocker’s “You Are So Beautiful” in the Scott Wozniak and Master Kev version that still catches me off guard when I play it, which is usually a sign that something is doing exactly what it should. The closing selections move toward the slightly more spacious and atmospheric — the final Logan Dataspirit remix brings the set to a close that feels earned rather than abrupt.

The Feeling Factor series doesn’t have a home on YouTube or Mixcloud yet for this volume, but you can find earlier volumes from the series on those platforms by searching for DJ 4play Feeling Factor. The full audio is available on request through the contact page.

This one is for late evenings and good headphones. Or an empty dance floor at four in the morning when the crowd has thinned and the people left are the ones who were really there for the music. You know who you are.
