Memphis cassette rap from 1991 transported via YouTube algorithm to drift-racing TikTok edits. Lost its soul at every stage.

What Phonk sounds like

Distorted 808 cowbell melodies, heavy bass and chopped vocal samples from 90s Memphis rap. Drift phonk speeds it up, with aggressive drums and sub bass. Menacing and hypnotic, with the cowbell riff stuck in your head for days. In a club it turns a quiet room into a mosh pit within one drop.

What you would see

Drift car videos, anime clips and gym workouts on TikTok. Hoodies, black clothing, dark cover art with skulls and grainy VHS textures.

From the booth

Phonk is built around distorted cowbell melodies, heavy bass and chopped vocal samples from 1990s Memphis rap. It runs at 120 to 150 BPM and grew from Trap, and it later fed Brazilian Phonk. The drift phonk variety speeds things up, with aggressive drums and sub bass.

The cowbell riff sticks in your head for days, and in a club it can turn a quiet room into a mosh pit within one drop. I tend to play phonk in short bursts for a younger crowd, often next to trap or Brazilian phonk. Listen for the menace and the hypnotic loop. When you are still learning, keep it short. Phonk tracks are intense, so a few in a row usually does the job.
