What Electroclash sounds like
Cold 1980s drum machines and buzzing analogue synths, played with punk attitude. Vocals are spoken, deadpan or shouted, often about fame and fashion. Songs are short and nasty, and the hooks sound like a cheap keyboard played with a sneer.
What you would see
Williamsburg warehouses, the first Electroclash Festival in October 2001, heavy eyeliner, mullets, thrift store glamour and art school performance on tiny stages.
Where and when
Electroclash took shape around 2001 in New York, United States; Munich, Germany. Tracks usually run at 110 to 130 BPM. You will also see it called Electro punk, new electro.

From the booth
Electroclash takes cold 1980s drum machines and buzzing analogue synths and plays them with punk attitude. At 110 to 130 BPM, it grew from Electro and Italo Disco and led to Electro House and Tech House.
Vocals are spoken, deadpan or shouted, often about fame and fashion. Songs are short and nasty. My instinct is to use electroclash for a playful, stylish detour in an indie or electronic set, often next to Italo disco, where the synth sounds feel related. Listen for the sneering hooks and cheap keyboard tones; they are the point. For newcomers, lean into the attitude. Electroclash does not need smooth transitions. Quick cuts suit its mood.
