South African jazz-house hybrid with log drum bass and piano improvisation. The most genuinely original new sound of the 2020s.

What Amapiano sounds like

Jazzy piano chords and airy pads over shakers and a soft kick, then the log drum: a deep, pitched, woody bass hit that bounces between the beats. Vocals are chanted or sung in local languages. Tracks run long and the dancers wait for the log drum to drop.

What you would see

Township taverns and lounges, cars with open doors blasting WhatsApp shared tracks, and crowds doing the ivosho and blowing whistles, in bucket hats and fresh sneakers.

Where and when

Amapiano took shape around 2015 in Gauteng townships, South Africa. Tracks usually run at 110 to 115 BPM.

Family tree

It grew out of Kwaito, Gqom and Deep House.

Artists to start with

Kabza De Small, DJ Maphorisa and Focalistic.

One track to hear

Focalistic feat. Vigro Deep, Ke Star (2020). It is an official upload, and you can play it on this genre’s card in the Dance Music Timeline.

Where it stands in 2026

Global, big in the UK and US clubs.

From the booth

Amapiano waits for the log drum. At 110 to 115 BPM, jazzy piano chords and airy pads float over shakers and a soft kick, then that deep, pitched, woody bass hit bounces between the beats. It grew from Kwaito, Gqom and Deep House.

Tracks run long, and the dancers wait for the log drum to drop. I like to use amapiano as a centrepiece in a global club set, often after afrobeats or afro house. Listen for the log drum; once you know it, you will hear it everywhere. When you are still learning, be patient. Amapiano builds slowly, and cutting tracks short can rob the floor of its best moments.
