What Electro House sounds like

Distorted, buzzing synth bass riffs that sound like a machine breaking, a compressed four on the floor kick, and heavy sidechain pumping. Vocals are robotic or shouted. Drops hit hard and dirty, halfway between house and rock, and the breakdown is often a single filtered riff building until the whole floor jumps at once.

What you would see

Late 2000s bloghouse parties in Paris, London and Los Angeles: neon, hoodies, skinny jeans, flash photos posted the next morning, and big glowing crosses and LED walls on stage.

Where and when

Electro House took shape around 2002 in Italy and France. Tracks usually run at 125 to 130 BPM. You will also see it called Bloghouse (late 2000s strand).

It grew out of Electro, Tech House and Electroclash. It led to Big Room House, Moombahton and Brostep.

The breakdown is often a single filtered riff building until the whole floor jumps. I reach for it in a high energy section, or as a nostalgic bloghouse moment. Keep an ear on the pumping; it tells you how the track breathes. If this style is new to you, be careful with volume. Electro house is heavily compressed, so match your levels carefully, or the next track will sound weak by comparison.
