Amsterdam Dance Event turns 30 this week, and it opens tomorrow. It began in 1996 as a business meeting for the Dutch music industry in one hotel on the Vijzelgracht. In 2025 it drew a record 600,000 visitors to more than 1,200 events in over 300 venues. For a DJ, a label person or a promoter, it’s the one week of the year when the conference and the club festival share a city, so you can work the business by day and hear what’s next by night.
This is the practical version: how ADE grew, what the two halves are, what it costs, who should go, and how to work it without burning out or your budget.

How ADE Started
ADE was first held in 1996. According to the history in I amsterdam Expat, it was created by Richard Zijlma and the Buma/Stemra Foundation as a business event for the Dutch music industry, with one venue, a hotel. In 1997 the daytime programme moved to De Balie, and 30 DJs played Paradiso, Escape and Melkweg at night, for about 300 attendees.

Growth after that was steady rather than explosive. The event has been run since 2018 by the Amsterdam Dance Event Foundation, a not for profit. Attendance topped 500,000 in 2023 and hit a record 600,000 in 2025, with visitors from more than 150 countries and almost 3,500 artists and speakers on the programme.
The Two Halves
The easiest way to understand ADE is to treat it as two events sharing a calendar.
ADE Pro, the Conference
The conference is based at Felix Meritis, a canal side building in the centre of Amsterdam. The 2026 Pro Pass covers four conference tracks: ADE Pro, ADE Green, ADE Culture Hub and ADE Startups, plus networking events, matchmaking and business hubs. One reviewer counted 319 programme items across the week. That’s too many to attend, so plan before you arrive.

The Festival
The festival half is more than 1,200 shows, parties and showcases across the city, from club nights to boat parties to museum events. ADE also runs an Arts and Culture strand. This is where the headliners are, and where tickets sell out first.

What It Costs
Prices move, so check ADE’s official site before you buy. What’s reported for 2026:
- ADE Pro Pass: one guide reports €795 plus a booking fee, about €825, after a price rise on 8 October. Another guide puts it near €700 with the fee. The sources disagree, so treat the official page as the answer. ADE’s site said the pass was 99 percent sold out and only 50 were left.
- Single event tickets: roughly €25 to €100 or more, depending on the room and the night. Bigger rooms sell out first.
- Day passes: they don’t exist. ADE doesn’t sell conference only or day passes, whatever third party sites say.
- What the pass includes: all conference tracks, the Pro database in the ADE app all year, networking events, the anniversary bag, and free local transport. Club entry is not guaranteed, because each venue caps how many pass holders it lets in.
- Rules: the pass is personal and non transferable, ID is checked, and you must collect the physical pass. Cancellations closed on 21 September.
Flights and Amsterdam hotels are the part that bites. Hotels are covered in their own section below. As a rough total, one 2025 cost breakdown puts attending at €1,500 to €2,500 once you add the pass, parties, lodging and flights, so treat that as a floor if you want the conference and the nights out.
Where to Stay in ADE Week
One Amsterdam price guide puts a normal October at €180 to €260 a night and says ADE adds a 50 to 100 percent premium on top, so plan for the high end or above. By tier, it lists 3 star at €120 to €220, 4 star at €180 to €320 and 5 star at €350 to €700, with 12.5 percent tourist tax added. A 2025 ADE cost breakdown quotes €200 to €300 for a comfortable hotel and €60 to €120 for a hostel bed. The guide recommends booking four to six months ahead, which is too late for this year, so for 2027 book as soon as the dates are out.
Where you stay matters as much as the price:
- Near the conference: the centre, around Felix Meritis and the canals, is walkable but the most expensive.
- Oost and Zuid: residential, with tram access, and calmer after a long night. Zuid weekend rates are lower.
- Noord: the guide says €40 to €60 cheaper than the centre, with a free ferry across the water.
- Haarlem: about 20 minutes by train and noticeably cheaper, if you don’t mind the last train home.
- Hostels and design hotels: one ADE stay guide lists The Student Hotel (doubles around €100 in 2022), Volkshotel (from about €69) and City Hub (about €60), all of which rise in ADE week.

Those prices are from guides, not quotes, and the older ones are from earlier editions. Check live rates for your dates.
Who Should Go
The Pro Pass makes sense if you’re a manager, agent, label person or promoter who’ll use the conference and networking on at least two days. It also suits an artist travelling with a team, or anyone who can work from Amsterdam that week.
It’s a poor fit if you’re a clubber who wants guaranteed entry, a producer hoping for the Lab access (that’s separate), or a weekend visitor. For you, single tickets for the two or three shows you really want are the smarter buy.
How to Work the Week
This part is advice, not a report. It’s the same logic that applies at any industry conference:
- Book meetings before you land. The Pro app and matchmaking tools exist for this. Three confirmed meetings beat thirty business cards.
- Pick a goal. Booking agent, label deal, press, a distributor, a new city to play. Choose one and plan around it.
- Buy tickets for your must sees early. Treat the pass as a way into the building, not into every club.
- Leave one day loose. The best nights tend to be the ones you didn’t plan.
- Follow up within a week. A short email that mentions where you met is worth more than anything you say at 2 a.m.
What’s Different at 30
The anniversary edition leans into music technology, which ADE’s site calls a strategic core of ADE Pro, and into the future of rave culture, with Insomniac founder Pasquale Rotella among the final headline speakers. If you care about where the business is going, those are the sessions to find first.
If You Can’t Go This Year
Most of us can’t fly to Amsterdam in October. The next best thing is to read what comes out of it, and to look closer to home: Seoul hosts its own music business fair every September, and the global guide to dance music conferences is on its way here soon. In the meantime, our essential festivals list covers the Amsterdam festivals that grew up around ADE, and Festival Economics shows what it costs to run one.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is Amsterdam Dance Event 2026?
21 to 25 October 2026, the 30th edition.
Do I need a Pro Pass to go to ADE?
Only for the conference. You can attend the festival with tickets to individual events, but those tickets are sold per show.
Is there a day pass?
No. ADE says it sells no conference only or day passes. The Pro Pass is the single route into the conference.
Is ADE worth it for a DJ?
If you have meetings to take, yes. If you only want to hear DJs, a few single tickets and a cheaper trip will do more for you than a Pro Pass.
