The Hip Hop Soul
A sample you half recognise, a hook the whole room knows, and the bass sitting just behind the beat.
Designed rarity: about 8% of takers
You want a groove you can feel and a hook you can sing. Hip hop came out of Bronx block parties in the 1970s, where DJs looped the drum breaks of funk and soul records so dancers could keep going, and in 1982 Afrika Bambaataa and the Soulsonic Force made Planet Rock for the breakdancers, which is where electro started. By the 1990s producers were building whole records out of soul samples, and singers like Mary J. Blige were putting R&B vocals over hip hop drums, which is roughly where hip hop soul got its name. You land here because you like music that sits in the pocket rather than racing ahead, because you would rather sing along than stand and analyse, and because a night is better when the whole room knows the words.
The cost is that the familiar can become the whole night. You tend to trust the record everyone knows over the one nobody has heard, and a set without a singalong can feel like a set that failed, even when the DJ was building something. You can also treat the rest of dance music as somebody else's scene, though house, garage and amapiano come from the same soul and gospel records you already love. The best nights for you are the ones where the tempo drops late and the bass stays warm.
Your strength
You can find the groove in almost any room and get people singing in it.
Your blind spot
You can mistake the familiar record for the right one.
Key takeaways
- Your sound is hip hop, R&B and the soul records underneath both.
- You trust a groove and a hook the whole room knows.
- House, garage and amapiano share your roots, so give one a night.

In Seoul
Hip hop and R&B in Seoul fill the biggest weekend rooms in Hongdae and Gangnam, and the smaller bars where the DJ plays the late slow jams after the crowd thins out.
Your first night
Go to a hip hop and R&B night this weekend, stay past the first hour of hits, and wait for the DJ to slow it down, which is usually where the best records are.
Rooms to try around the world
- Jazz Cafe, London: A small Camden room where soul, R&B and hip hop acts play close enough to see them breathe.
- Apollo Theater, New York: A Harlem stage with a long soul and R&B history and an audience that sings along and lets you know.
- History, Toronto: A big Toronto room that books R&B and hip hop shows on a sound system that is kind to vocals.
