You do not walk into a room to find out what happens. You walk in to execute something you have already heard in your head, and most of the time the room agrees with you, because the thing you built is genuinely good. Your transitions are not lucky. Your endings arrive on purpose. When the CDJ fails you have already thought about what you do next, which is why nobody in the room ever finds out that it failed.

The cost is that you are not really listening. You are checking the room against a model of the room, and when the two disagree you tend to trust the model. Everyone has watched you play the correct record into a floor that had moved on ten minutes earlier, and stay with it, because moving would have meant admitting the plan was wrong. The best nights of your life have all been ones where something broke early enough that you had to stop reading your own notes.

You can feel a room turn about forty seconds before it turns, and you have a physical, almost irritated reaction to a floor that is being ignored. Promoters love you because you have never once emptied a room, and other DJs quietly envy the fact that you can be handed any slot, in any city, with no information, and be fine.

But responsiveness is also a way of never being on the hook. Ask what a night of yours sounded like a week later and nobody can tell you, including you, because it was assembled entirely out of other people's signals. You have spent years being extremely good at a thing that leaves no trace, and there is a version of you that has been avoiding the harder question, which is what you would play if nobody in the room reacted at all.

The set is the receipt. The real work happened alone, over months, in listings and back catalogues and one seller in Busan who ships slowly. You own things that around forty people worldwide own, you know why each of them matters, and you are not remotely interested in whether the floor knows. When you find something, the feeling lasts about a week and then you need another one.

The problem is that rarity has quietly become a value judgement. You have played a worse record over a better one because the better one was obvious, and you have told yourself the room deserved the challenge, which is a flattering way of saying you wanted credit. Depth is real, but it is not a substitute for a set that goes somewhere, and there are nights where your crate is more interesting than your night was.

You want the peak and you are not embarrassed about it. You have a physical instinct for the moment a room is ready and a total lack of patience for the twenty minutes before it. Where other people build, you decide. Big, known, unimprovable records, placed with real precision, at the exact point where the floor will take them. It is a genuine skill and most of the DJs who criticise it cannot do it.

What you are worse at is the part with no reward in it. Warm up rooms bore you and it shows within three records, so you take the slots that flatter you and quietly avoid the ones that would teach you something. You also spend big far too early, which means your nights peak at ninety minutes and then have nowhere left to stand. The people who last are usually the ones who learned to wait, and waiting is the one thing you have never practised.

You take the warm up and you mean it. You know who is standing at the bar, who is having a bad month, which promoter is about to lose money and which door person has not eaten. You will happily hand the booth over at the moment it gets good, and you will still be there at close. Scenes are held together by about four people per city and you are usually one of them, whether or not anybody has said so out loud.

The uncomfortable part is that being useful is easier than being exposed. You have turned down slots you wanted by pre emptively offering them to somebody else, and then felt aggrieved about it later, which is not fair to them. Generosity that quietly keeps score is not generosity. There is also a body count of years in this, and at some point the scene will move on without noticing, because you never gave it anything with your name on it to remember.

You hear things early and you are right often enough that people have stopped arguing with you. Half your bag is unreleased, sent by people who trust your ears, and you play it into rooms that are not quite ready, on the correct assumption that they will be. You have been the first person in your city to play four or five things that later became normal. Nobody remembers that, which is fine, because you had already moved.

The failure mode is that novelty is a much lower bar than quality, and you know it. A record being new resolves an argument in your head that a record being good would have to actually win. You discard things at eight weeks that deserved a year, you have no canon to fall back on when the new stuff is thin, and you have made floors work quite hard for material that, honestly, was interesting rather than finished.

Nothing in your bag is unattached. You know the label, the year, the room it was made for and the three records it is arguing with, and that knowledge changes how you sequence, not just how you talk. You are extremely patient. You will spend fifty minutes setting up something that pays off once, and when it does the people who were listening properly know precisely what happened.

But you have started using history as an argument you cannot lose. When something new does not move you, you reach for lineage instead of for a reason, and a twenty year old record is not automatically better than a twenty week old one, it is just safer for you. There are younger DJs in your city doing something you have not bothered to understand, and you have described them, more than once, in a way that was really about protecting your own position.

This is a rare result. You are one of the most prepared people in any room you enter, and one of the least present. The work happens alone, at home, over long stretches, on equipment you have opinions about, and it is aimed at where the music is going rather than where it has been. You are patient to an almost unreasonable degree. You will sit on an idea for a year. You do not want the drink afterwards and you have never once posted about a gig.

The trouble is that music is made of rooms and you keep trying to do it without them. You are demonstrably better than DJs who get four times the work, and you have decided that this is a comment on the scene rather than on you, which is convenient and only half true. Turning down the social part is a real choice with real costs, and one of the costs is that the people who could actually use what you do have no way of finding out that you exist.

Nobody prepares harder or waits longer, and it is audible.

The other rare one. You improvise completely and you concede nothing, which is a combination most people cannot hold, because improvisation usually comes with a desire to please. Not with you. You arrive with no order, you decide everything live, and what you decide is frequently the opposite of what the floor is asking for. When it lands, it is the best thing anybody in that room hears all year, and everyone present knows it.

When it does not land, and it often does not, you have no mechanism for noticing in time. You have read a room correctly, disliked what you read, and gone the other way on principle, then explained afterwards that they were not ready. Sometimes that is true. Often you were just bored and made it their problem. You are also very hard to book twice, and you have been quietly telling yourself for years that this is a compliment.

Weddings, corporate year end parties, hotel bars, a brand launch in a Seongsu warehouse where nobody looks at the booth. You are the most employed DJ in this quiz and the least written about. The client sends a list, a do not play list and a running order with speeches in it, and you deliver all three to the minute, in a suit, on a system somebody else specified. You know the first dance is the job and the last hour is the reward. You get paid before you leave and you are home before the afterparty starts.

The cost is that you have stopped having taste in public. Twenty years of playing the record the brief asked for has left you unsure what you would play if nobody was paying, and the last time somebody handed you an open floor at midnight you played it safe out of habit and called it professionalism. You also carry a quiet contempt for club DJs who earn a fifth of what you do, and a quieter envy of the fact that somebody, somewhere, remembers their sets.

You make records, and the set is where you find out whether they work. Most of what you play is yours, half of it unfinished, and you are listening to the low end of your own bounce on a proper system rather than to the room. Your sets have a coherence nobody else can fake, because every record was made by the same pair of ears, and when your material is good the room hears something it will not hear anywhere else for a year. The studio is where you live. The booth is where you check your work.

The problem is that you treat six hundred people as a monitoring environment. You play the new version, then the other new version, and the floor is asked to sit through an A and B test it did not agree to. You have stopped buying other people's records because you do not need them, which means your sets have no argument in them except your own, and when your own work is in a thin patch, so is your night. You are also the DJ most likely to describe a flat room as a good test.

The camera is set before the monitor is. You know where the light falls, which side of the mixer reads better in a vertical frame, and exactly which sixty seconds of the next two hours will be the post. This is real skill and it pays, in followers that turn into bookings that turn into flights. You are also, and this is the part the older DJs miss, the reason a nineteen year old in Daegu heard the record at all. You have a bigger audience than any club in Seoul, and it is watching you from a bus.

The cost is that the room has become an extra. You will restart a transition because the first take was not clean, play the drop that clips well over the record that would have worked, and end a set on the moment the camera wanted rather than the one the floor did. Your sets have started to sound like a highlight reel of themselves. And when the connection is bad, or the video does not land, you feel it more than you felt any room going flat, which tells you where the audience actually is.

There is also a bit of self flattery in leaving early, a way of standing above the part everyone else came for, and the room does not owe you that pose.

And there is a kind of control in it that you would never call control: when someone changes the plan you feel it as a small betrayal, which is a lot to ask of people who only wanted to go dancing.

The trouble is that a peak needs the hours you skipped, and you keep asking rooms for a payoff you did not sit through. You are also easier to satisfy than you would ever admit: the biggest moment usually wins with you, and the biggest moment is very often the most obvious thing in the set.

The honest criticism is that you have outsourced your taste and then complain about where you end up. You have been to a hundred nights and could not say what you actually want from one, and on the day the people who organise everything finally stop organising, you will simply not go out.

And the people who left at two are not lesser clubbers, they simply have Sundays, which you gave up defending a long time ago.

You leave when it stops being good, not when the drinks stop working, and you are usually the first to notice which of those has happened.

The cost is that you are always slightly outside the thing you came for. A room at four in the morning runs on a shared looseness, and you are watching it rather than in it, which shades into judging it more often than you admit. You keep a quiet tally of everyone else's worst hour. And because you have never once needed anyone to get you home, you underrate how much of a scene is people doing exactly that for each other.

You hear it with the lights on, and you sleep afterwards, and you are in better shape than anyone who did it the other way.

What you lose is the part that only happens late. Rooms change after midnight, the performance drops out of people, and the record a DJ has held for four hours gets played to whoever stayed. You have decided that part is not worth the Sunday, which is fair. But you have started saying the night crowd is doing it wrong, which is a different claim, and a lot of the daylight is about being seen doing it, in good light, with a camera nearby.

Younger people ask your opinion and then find out you were right, which annoys them, and fairly. You have been the oldest person in the room for a decade and you have stopped noticing.

The cost is that being right has started to do the job that being curious used to. You have a settled view of what a good room is and you rarely let a new one argue with it, and the staff who greet you by name are also, quietly, a way of never being a stranger anywhere. There is a version of you that goes early and leaves early because that is when the room is best, and a version that does it because that is when the room is yours, and you have stopped checking which one turned up.

Your room is down a flight of concrete stairs behind a door that has never had a sign on it. Capacity is somewhere between eighty and a hundred and forty, depending on who is counting. The ceiling is low enough that the sub sits in your chest instead of your ears, the walls sweat by two in the morning, and nobody has ever taken a good photograph in there. The bar sells four things. The staff know the regulars and are polite to everyone else. It works because it was never designed to be anything other than a place to hear a record properly.

Your trip is one city, one district, and about six streets. You do not tour. You go back to the same place three nights running and by the third night the door person nods at you, which is the entire holiday as far as you are concerned. Hongdae and Itaewon both still have versions of this, and so do Toronto and Montreal if you know who to ask. The drawback is real: a room this small runs on the goodwill of about forty people, and when a few of them move away or have kids it goes flat fast. You will also lose whole nights to a room where the booking was simply bad, because you refuse to leave a place you have decided is yours.

Your room has no roof and closes at two because the neighbours won. It opens while it is still light, fills by ten, peaks at half past midnight and is empty by twenty past two with the chairs stacked. The sound is a compromise, because it always is outdoors, and the DJ is playing to a crowd that is half there for the night and half there for each other. Nobody is being tested. The whole thing is built around the fact that it ends, which makes the last hour better than it has any right to be.

Your trip is short, warm and social. Three nights, a group, someone else booking the table, a flight home on the Sunday afternoon while you are still slightly wrecked. Summer in Seoul does this properly and so does Vancouver for about nine weeks a year. The honest drawback is that this room will never give you the thing that happens at four in the morning, and if you only ever go to places with a curfew you will keep hearing about that thing secondhand. Rooftops also collapse the moment the weather turns, which means your entire way of going out has a season and you have to do something else in February.

Four hundred capacity, a rig that was specified by someone who cared, a booth you can actually work in and a sound engineer who is still there at four. This is the room where the craft is visible. Big enough that a build has somewhere to go, small enough that the DJ can see the back wall and adjust. Doors at eleven, headline at one, lights up at five, and everyone in the building knows the shape of that. It is not exotic. It is the room that most great sets you have heard actually happened in.

Your trip is planned. Tickets bought, one flight, two or three nights, a specific bill you looked up in advance and a hotel within walking distance of the venue. You are the person the group thanks and then finds slightly rigid. The drawback: a room this well run is also a room that has been priced accordingly, and there are nights where the booking is technically excellent and completely inert. You will defend the venue anyway, because you like the way it is put together, and you can spend years confusing good infrastructure with a good night.

A stage on a beach at a festival, which is a room with no walls and therefore no acoustics worth defending. The sound scatters, the wind takes the top end, and you are standing in sand that ruins any attempt to dance properly. None of that matters, because the appeal was never fidelity. It is daylight, a lot of people, a sea behind the stage and the specific unreality of hearing a kick drum at four in the afternoon. Korea does this at Busan and along the west coast, and it is one of the few formats where the location genuinely does half the work.

Your trip is a logistics problem you enjoy: a bus, a bag, wristbands, a tent or a room booked eight months early with three other people in it. You will spend more time queuing and walking than listening and you have made peace with that. The drawback is that you are trading almost everything a room can offer for weather and scale. Sets get cut short, headliners cancel, the sound is compromised before anyone touches a fader, and if you only go to festivals you have never really heard most of these artists. You have heard them outdoors, at reduced volume, from ninety metres back.

You will put up with real discomfort for something that only happens once.

Thirty seats, one very good pair of speakers, a wall of records and a person behind the counter who chooses everything. Nobody dances. The lights stay on low, the drinks are slow and expensive, and there is an unspoken ceiling on how loudly you may talk. Seoul has built more of these than almost anywhere, and the good ones are genuinely serious: the point is that a record gets played all the way through, at the right volume, with nothing else asked of you. It is the only nightlife format where sitting still is the correct behaviour.

Your trip is quiet and slightly solitary even when you bring someone. Two or three places a night, walking between them, home before the last train, notes on your phone about what you heard. The drawback is that this room gives you no chance of the thing you occasionally still want, which is a floor going off at three. It also flatters a certain kind of person: it is very easy to sit in a listening bar looking reverent and mistake that for having been somewhere. Reverence is cheap. A room that will not let you talk also will not let you be surprised.

You can sit with a record long enough to actually hear it.

A big shell of a building with a temporary rig in it, doors at midnight and no fixed end. Concrete, cold air, one working toilet block and a queue for water. The room only makes sense over its full length, because the first three hours are deliberately unremarkable and the payoff sits somewhere around six in the morning when about a third of the people have gone and the ones left have stopped performing. Nothing about it is comfortable and that is structural, not accidental.

Your trip is built around one night and then two days of recovery you did not budget for. You travel light, you sleep in the afternoon, you go alone or with one person who understands not talking on the way home. The drawback is straightforward and you already know it: this format asks for your whole body and gives back an experience you cannot describe to anyone who was not there, which makes you slightly insufferable about it. It also fails badly. A long night with a bad crowd is eleven hours of standing in a cold building, and you will still stay, because leaving would mean admitting you got it wrong.

The Han River runs these all summer and they are better than they should be, precisely because nobody can drift off to the next place. The crowd is locked in for three hours, which changes how a floor behaves: it fills earlier, it commits earlier, and the middle of the night has an intensity that a room with an open door never gets.

Your trip is booked, timed and slightly formal. You know when it starts, you know when it ends, and you have plans for after because the boat docks at a civilised hour. The drawback is that you have paid to remove your own exit. When the boat is wrong, and sometimes it is very wrong, you are trapped with a hundred and ninety people you did not choose and a DJ who has misread the entire evening. Novelty rooms also age badly. Six hundred people, half of whom are here because their company bought a table. The brief is clear, the timings are on a run sheet, and the room is judged on whether it went smoothly rather than whether anyone was transported. It is the most professionally run nightlife in the country and almost nobody writes about it, because there is nothing romantic in a room that finishes on time and pays on the day.

Your trip is organised by somebody else and it is comfortable in a way you have stopped apologising for. Good hotel, airport transfer, an itinerary, and a night that ends in time to sleep properly. The drawback is that a room like this has no capacity for accident. Nothing unplanned can happen in a ballroom, and the entire reason people keep going back to worse rooms is that unplanned things happen in them. You get consistency, service and a chair when you want one, and you will never once be surprised.

The volume tops out at conversation plus a bit. Half the room is not listening and the other half has been coming here for six years. It is the least glamorous room in this quiz and probably the one you will spend the most hours in over your life, because it is open on a Tuesday and nobody has to plan anything to be there.

Your trip is a fifteen minute walk. You do not fly for music and you find people who do a bit exhausting. The strength of this is real, because familiarity gives you things a visitor never gets: you know the staff, you know the room at every hour, you can leave at eleven without it being a wasted night. The drawback is equally real. You are never going to be genuinely astonished in a room you have been in four hundred times, and there is a version of you that uses the local as an excuse. It opens at seven and closes around two. The sound is quiet and correct, a pair of speakers chosen by someone who listens, and nothing in the room is louder than a conversation. The crowd is small, older than most rooms in this quiz, and half of it is regulars sitting one seat apart. Nightlife at conversation volume, which is still nightlife.

Your trip is a list of four bars in one district and a hotel within a short walk, because you intend to have a drink in every one of them. Hannam, Cheongdam and the alleys of Euljiro all have rooms like this now, and Toronto and Montreal have had them longer. You leave each one before it gets loud, and you spend more per night than anyone else in this quiz without ever seeing a floor. The drawback is that this room rewards being a certain kind of person: it flatters knowledge, it rewards staying seated, and it is very easy to spend a year in bars like this and mistake having opinions about a bottle for having gone out. Coffee and juice at the bar, no alcohol, a rig that would be modest at night and is plenty in daylight, and a crowd that is dressed for the office underneath the dancing. Capacity is whatever the space holds, usually somewhere between a hundred and three hundred, because these run in cafes, rooftops and rented rooms rather than clubs. Seoul has them now, mostly around Seongsu, and so does every city with an office district. Nobody is wrecked, everybody is awake, and the energy is real precisely because it has a hard stop.

Your trip is a working week with a rave in it. You are in the city for something else, you found the morning session online, and you went before your first meeting and told everyone about it at lunch. You never see the city at three in the morning and you have stopped pretending you want to. The drawback is that this room has removed the parts of nightlife that made it nightlife: the risk, the strangers, the lost hours, the version of yourself that only exists after midnight. What is left is fitness with a soundtrack, and you know that, and you will defend it anyway because you feel great on a Tuesday. You have also never had a night go wrong, which means you have never had a night go properly right.

A door with no queue because there is a list, and you are on it or you are not. Sixty to a hundred and twenty people, a room that looks the same every week and is meant to, a system that is good without being the point, and a bar where the prices exist to keep the room small. The DJ is booked for the regulars, not for the flyer, and plays until the room decides it is done rather than to a licence. Everyone knows the door staff by name and the door staff know everyone's name, which is the entire mechanism. This is a club in the older sense of the word: a group of people who have agreed to keep seeing each other, with music attached.

Your trip is built around introductions. You know someone in the city who knows the room, you message them a week out, and the whole visit turns on whether they reply. When it works, it is the most consistent night in this quiz. Hannam and Cheongdam both have versions, some of them almost invisible, and so do Toronto and New York for a membership fee. The drawback is the one you would rather not hear: a room this closed is only as good as the people in it, and rooms full of people who all know each other go stale in a way an open door never does. The Paradise Garage was a members club on King Street in lower Manhattan, open from 1977 until it closed in 1987, with Larry Levan playing on a system built by Richard Long and no bar to serve. It took its shape from David Mancuso's Loft parties, which had been running in New York since 1970 on invitation, with food put out and no alcohol licence to answer to. Nights were long by design. People came for the room and the people in it, and the records were how the room talked.

Landing here means you treat a night as a place rather than a performance, and you are patient in a way most people are not. The criticism is that this is the most romanticised room in the whole history, and reverence for it has become its own kind of laziness. You can end up defending an experience you did not have against every room that is actually open tonight, and mistaking a members-only door for a standard of quality. It was a private club. That was the deal, and it excluded people too.

Chicago had the Warehouse, where Frankie Knuckles held the residency from 1977, and the Music Box, where Ron Hardy played louder and rougher. From 1984 the city started making its own records instead of importing them: Jesse Saunders put out On and On, then Trax and DJ International pressed almost anything that moved, often badly. A Roland bass machine built for guitarists got misused into acid. In January 1987 a Chicago record, Steve Silk Hurley's Jack Your Body, went to number one in Britain, which is roughly when the local secret stopped being local.

You are here because you would rather finish something than perfect it, and because you assume the tools you already own are enough. That is a real strength and it is also how you end up with a hard drive of nearly finished ideas. The honest criticism of this instinct is that speed and rawness can be a hiding place: it is easier to release forty rough things than to be judged on one careful one. Chicago also shows what happens next, which is that the people who made the records mostly did not get paid.

Three friends who went to school in Belleville, a town outside Detroit, made a music out of Kraftwerk, Parliament and the late night radio of the Electrifying Mojo. Juan Atkins got there first, as Cybotron and then as Model 500 on his own Metroplex label. Derrick May released Strings of Life on Transmat in 1987. Kevin Saunderson had the records that crossed over. The word techno was fixed as a genre name by a British compilation in 1988 that needed something to call it, which is a very ordinary origin for a very unordinary idea.

You think in systems and long horizons, you are comfortable being ahead of the room, and you would rather be understood in ten years than liked tonight. The criticism is that futurism is easy to perform and hard to deliver, and that a lot of people who land here mistake being difficult for being early. Detroit techno was also made by Black musicians in a city that was being written off, and it got exported, renamed and monetised largely elsewhere. If you claim the lineage, claim that part too.

A handful of London DJs came back from Ibiza in 1987 having heard a room that mixed everything, and put it into small clubs like Shoom. Within two years it had outgrown every building it was in and moved to fields near motorway junctions, with phone lines telling thousands of people where to drive. The government responded with much bigger fines for unlicensed parties in 1990, and eventually with the 1994 law that put the phrase repetitive beats into British statute. By then the mass version had already turned into an industry.

You are the least controlling result in this quiz. You believe a night is a thing that happens to a group of people rather than something one person delivers, and you are genuinely good at surrendering to a room. The criticism is that this era is remembered almost entirely through the feeling and almost not at all through the records, which is convenient if you never had to have taste. Openness can also be indiscriminate. Loving everything and loving nothing look the same from the outside at five in the morning.

British rave sped up until it came apart, and what came out the other side was jungle: breakbeats cut to pieces and pitched up, with sub bass inherited from sound system culture underneath. It ran on dubplates and London pirate radio before shops would stock it, which meant a track could rule a room for a month without officially existing. The engine of most of it was about six seconds of drumming from a 1969 B-side by the Winstons, chopped until it stopped sounding like a drummer at all.

You have an unusual tolerance for pace and for things being unfinished, and you are more interested in what a thing can be turned into than what it was. The criticism is that this instinct burns through material, including people. Scenes that move this fast forget their own first eighteen months, and by the mid 90s jungle was already being sanded down and re-credited to people who arrived late. If you land here, notice how often you drop something the moment it stops being difficult.

Parties on the beaches of north Goa in India ran from the 1970s freak scene onward, and by the early 1990s the music was electronic and the format was fixed: sets played from DAT tapes, in a set order, tracks that were not released anywhere, timed so the peak landed with the sun. When local pressure and noise restrictions made it harder, the scene scattered rather than died, into Israel, Japan, Britain and later Portugal, each with its own labels and its own festivals. It has been running continuously ever since without ever once being fashionable.

This is a rare result. It means you plan far ahead, you serve an arc rather than a crowd, and you are entirely comfortable being outside the conversation. The criticism is that a scene which cannot be embarrassed also cannot be corrected. Psytrance developed a closed vocabulary and a slightly mystical self-image that lets it dismiss every outside opinion as ignorance, and the same move is available to you personally. Certainty that has never been tested is not the same thing as conviction.

It began as an after hours room: American vocal house played fast for people who wanted something warmer than jungle. Then the drums dropped their second kick and 2 step arrived, all shuffle and gap, built for a crowd that came to be seen as much as to dance. Between 1999 and 2001 it was on daytime radio and at the top of the charts, with door policies, dress codes and Sunday sessions. It ended by splitting in two: one half went pop, and the other half got colder and harder and became grime.

You take the social contract of a night seriously. You dress for it, you show up for the people, and you have no patience for the idea that enjoying yourself is a lesser mode. The criticism is that you are the most audience-pleasing result here, and pleasing an audience is a skill that quietly turns into a ceiling. UK garage also demonstrates the cost precisely: the moment it was fully accepted, it was over, and the interesting part was the half that got refused entry.

In the 2000s the floor split. One half went minimal: long tracks where almost nothing happens, played from laptops and CDJs, centred on Berlin and Cologne and, by way of Windsor, Ontario, Richie Hawtin. The other half went the opposite direction, compressed and bright and loud, distributed as MP3s through blogs and MySpace pages, with the Paris label Ed Banger at the front of it. The two halves despised each other and were reacting to exactly the same event, which was the file replacing the record.

You land here if you are the most deliberate person in the room and the least interested in whether the room agrees. You have a position, you have reasons, and you will hold it while the floor empties. The criticism is that both halves of this era eventually mistook a stance for an idea. Minimal ran out of things to remove and blog house ran out of headroom, and neither noticed until the next thing arrived. Being reactive to a trend is still being led by it, just at a distance.

Distribution stopped being the difficult part. A track can be finished on a Tuesday, carried by a playlist or a short clip, be everywhere by Saturday and be gone inside a month. Sets get recorded, cut into fragments and served back as content, which changes how people behave in the room while it is still happening. The whole history is available simultaneously and flat, so a record from 1988 and a record from last week arrive in the same queue with the same weight and no context attached to either.

You are fast, unsentimental and genuinely good at finding things, and you are right that most nostalgia is a defence mechanism. The criticism is that everyone in this era shares the same references while believing they found them independently, because the thing feeding you is also feeding several million other people. Volume is not the same as depth. If you cannot say where something came from, you are not really choosing it, you are just being served it slightly earlier than the rest.

For about five years dance music became American stadium music. Electric Daisy Carnival moved from Los Angeles to Las Vegas in 2011, Ultra in Miami grew into a broadcast event, and Swedish House Mafia sold out Madison Square Garden in December 2011 before announcing their split the following year. Las Vegas casinos signed DJs to residencies worth more than most touring careers, and Hakkasan opened in 2013 with Calvin Harris and Tiesto on the door. Skrillex, deadmau5 and Avicii were on pop radio and at the top of the charts. The form itself narrowed to the build and the drop, borrowed from trance and Dutch house and stripped of the rest. SFX Entertainment bought up festivals and promoters across the world and filed for bankruptcy in early 2016, which is as good a closing date as any. Ultra Korea launched in Seoul in 2012, and Octagon in Gangnam spent most of the decade ranked among the world's big rooms.

You land here if you want the payoff now, you want everyone in the room to get it at the same time, and you have no patience for the idea that being hard to like is a virtue. That is a real instinct and it built the largest audiences dance music has ever had. The criticism is that a form built to deliver a peak every ninety seconds cannot hold anything between the peaks, and it drove out most of the people who came for the in between. A lot of them never came back. The decade also ran on a sponsor's calendar rather than a scene's, so when the money moved, the rooms emptied, and there was no lineage underneath to catch what fell.

Amapiano came out of the townships around Pretoria and Johannesburg in the middle of the 2010s, built from kwaito, deep house and South African jazz, and settled into its shape by around 2019: a slow tempo a little over 110 beats a minute, long stretches of almost nothing, then a bassline played on the log drum sound that became its signature. Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa's Scorpion Kings records in 2019 put it at the top of the national charts. Afro house is the older cousin, the South African deep house lineage that Black Coffee carried from Durban and Johannesburg to the rest of the world through the 2010s. What made amapiano different from every earlier movement in this quiz is how it travelled: dance challenges and short clips moved a track from Soweto to Lagos to London in weeks, before any radio station or label had a say. By the mid 2020s most of the rooms in Seoul that book house had an Afro slot, and several run whole nights on it.

You land here if you are patient in a way that is social rather than solitary, you like a track that takes its time, and you are comfortable with something being new and popular at once. That is a rare and healthy combination. The criticism is that a sound which spread through a fifteen second clip gets judged by the fifteen seconds, and you may be doing the same: loving the drop of the log drum and never sitting through the seven minutes that earn it. There is also the older problem, which is that South African producers made the records and a lot of the money is being made elsewhere, in the same pattern Chicago and Detroit already showed. Landing here should mean you know whose music this is.

In March 2020 the clubs closed, nearly everywhere, nearly at once. Berlin's venues pooled into United We Stream within days, Boiler Room ran its Streaming From Isolation series from living rooms in April, and Club Quarantine, started in Toronto that same month, ran nightly on a video call with a door policy of a meeting link. HÖR, the tiled Berlin room that had launched the year before, became the stream that people kept open. In Seoul, a cluster of cases traced to the Itaewon clubs in early May 2020 closed the district and put the word club into the national news for the wrong reasons. Sets that had been made for two hundred bodies were played to a camera and a chat window, and people watched them alone in kitchens. The reopening summer of 2021 came first to the places that opened first, and later, and more cautiously, to Seoul.

You land here if you are most yourself with the work and least yourself with the crowd, and if you found that a set watched alone on a laptop could still be the best thing you heard that year. That is honest, and a lot of people who claim to be about the room discovered they were mostly about the bar. The criticism is that the stream cut the room out of the music entirely, and the room was doing a job. Without a floor to disagree with you, every set becomes a monologue, and you may have got used to that. Some of the people who came back to the clubs in 2021 came back different, less patient with strangers, more sure of their own taste, and it is worth asking whether you are one of them.
