PARENT of Jungle and D&B. not a subgenre. Breakbeats, sirens, 160 BPM. UK warehouse and field raves at peak euphoria. The Criminal Justice Act 1994 was passed specifically to stop it.

What Breakbeat Hardcore sounds like

Sped up hip hop breakbeats layered over four to the floor kicks. Hoover synths, rave stabs, piano riffs and helium chipmunk vocals. Deep sub bass pulses underneath. Raw and joyful. When the break kicks in again, the whole warehouse jumps.

What you would see

Huge raves like Fantazia, Dreamscape and Raindance, fields and warehouses, strobe and smoke. White gloves, Vicks, whistles, baggy tie dye and smiley faces on the flyers.

From the booth

Breakbeat hardcore is the joyful chaos of early rave, sped up hip hop breaks at 140 to 155 BPM over four on the floor kicks. It comes from Acid House, New Beat and Old School Hip Hop, and it fed Jungle, Happy Hardcore, Big Beat and Drum and Bass.

Notice the layers: hoover synths, piano riffs, chipmunk vocals and deep sub bass. When the break drops back in, the room jumps. I like to use it in a rave or old school set, or as a bridge between house and jungle. A tip for newcomers: breakbeats can drift if the tempo is off, so check your phrasing carefully. Line up the break with the downbeat, and the rest will follow.
