Home » Where Seoul Students Drink: University District Map
⏱ 8 min read

Walk out of almost any Seoul campus gate and within five minutes you’re in a 대학가 (daehakga), a university district: hofs, pochas, barbecue grills and noraebang stacked three floors high, where a pitcher costs less than one cocktail in Itaewon. Most Koreans had their first real night out on one of these streets, years before a club ever saw them.

We’ve mapped ten of them, with 106 student bars, each pinned with its Korean name, an English name and an address you can paste straight into a map app. Each district has its own character, and knowing which one suits your night matters more than any single bar on it.

The Map: Ten Districts, 106 Bars

Each pink pin is a campus; each smaller pin is a bar near it. Tap a district to zoom in, and tap a bar for its Korean name and address. Every bar was pulled from Kakao Map (카카오맵), the map Koreans actually use, so check hours and the door before you go: student bars open and close with the semester.

The West Side: Hongdae, Sinchon and Ewha

Hongdae (홍대) is the student district that became something bigger. Hongik University’s art school drew cheap studios in the 1980s, the studios drew live clubs in the 1990s, and the rest is in our Hongdae, Itaewon and Gangnam guide. On the main strip today it’s Korean pop, chart pop and hip hop bars for university students and young tourists, and if you’re over thirty it isn’t really built for you. The pochas around 서교동 (Seogyo-dong), on the map here, are where the student night still starts. Hongik University station is also the second busiest in Seoul after midnight, behind Gangnam, according to Seoul Metro figures reported by Herald Business.

Sinchon (신촌), a stop east on Line 2, is the district Seoul measures every other one against: Yonsei, Sogang and Ewha, with about 94,000 students between them. It had the longest slump of any, with 22 percent of small shops empty in 2023, and it’s coming back on the strength of buskers and festivals rather than cheap soju. Ewha (이화여대), one station further, runs down the hill to meet it. The full story of both is in our university drinking streets piece.

The East Side: Konkuk, Wangsimni and Hoegi

Konkuk University station (건대입구), where Lines 2 and 7 cross, is the biggest night out in east Seoul. Konkuk and Sejong students are the base, but the crowd comes from all over the east side, and the lamb skewer street by Exit 5 makes it the only campus district where the late night food is Chinese rather than Korean. It’s the closest thing east Seoul has to Hongdae, with the same size and the same student first crowd.

Wangsimni (왕십리) is Hanyang University’s district, and the one I know best: I’ve taught at Hanyang since 2008. It’s a commuter hub first, with four subway lines meeting under one roof, so the bars around the station mix students with office workers heading home, and the night runs earlier and steadier than Konkuk’s. It’s a good place to start a night in the east because you can get anywhere from it.

Hoegi (회기), by Kyung Hee University, is the simplest pleasure on this list: the pajeon alley by Exit 1, with seafood and kimchi pancakes, makgeolli by the kettle, big portions and low prices. It’s also one of the steadiest campus streets in the city, with shop vacancy around 3 percent in 2025 and 2026.

North and South: Anam, Daehakro, Sillim and Heukseok

Anam (안암), outside Korea University, is a makgeolli district by tradition; the school still has a cheer song called Ode to Makgeolli. Its biggest night of the year is the 고연전 (Goyeonjeon), the autumn sports rivalry with Yonsei, when both Anam and Sinchon fill up. Daehakro (대학로), near Hyehwa station, literally means university street and lost its university in 1975, when Seoul National moved south. It’s a theatre district now, a night of a play and dinner, and many places close by nine.

South of the river, Seoul National University’s students have moved from Nokdu-geori (녹두거리) in Sillim, the old exam village street, to Sharosu-gil (샤로수길) by Seoul National University station, more than 380 shops and one of the healthiest campus streets in the city. Heukseok (흑석), around Chung-Ang University on the hill above the Han River, is the smallest district on the map: a short strip of pubs and grills by the Line 9 station, and a Seoul campus town project since 2019 that tries to keep the area young.

The Catch: Students Are Drinking Less

These streets are thinner than they were. National Tax Service figures reported by Newsis show liquor shipments in 2025 fell below 3 million kilolitres for the first time in 27 years, and a poll of 2,000 people in their twenties and thirties found fewer drinking each month and most trying non alcoholic drinks. Konkuk’s spending by people in their twenties fell by double digits in 2025, and the smaller streets outside the women’s universities have lost the most shops.

Students still go out; they go out less often, spend less, and leave earlier. Hite Jinro told Sidae News that soju sales across fifteen Seoul university districts rose about 20 percent in March and April 2026 over the start of the year, which is just the new semester. The busy weeks are the first month of each term, festival season in May and September, and exam’s end.

How to Do a Student Night

Pick one district and stay in it: these are walking neighbourhoods, and moving across the city costs more than the drinks. Go early, from about 7pm, because student nights peak before the last train rather than after it. Start at a hof or a pocha, eat as you drink, and move to a noraebang or a second bar the way your Korean friends will. If you want to dance afterwards, Hongdae and Konkuk are the two where a club is a short walk away.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Seoul university district is best for a night out?

For size, Hongdae and Konkuk. For cheap food and makgeolli, Hoegi and Anam. For the classic student street, Sinchon, which is recovering after a long slump.

Are student bars only for students?

No. Anyone of legal drinking age can go in, and you’ll find office workers and locals alongside students. The crowd skews young, though, especially in Hongdae and Konkuk.

How do I use the map?

Tap a pink campus pin to zoom into its district, then tap any bar for its Korean and English names and address. Copy the Korean name into Kakao Map or Naver Map for directions and current hours.
