What Boogie sounds like
Slower and leaner than disco. Synth bass bubbling on a Prophet 5 or Minimoog, drum machine claps, slap bass and chunky keyboard chords. Soulful vocals with space around them, and long dub breaks. The kind of groove that makes a crowd bounce rather than gallop.
What you would see
Paradise Garage and Manhattan clubs, roller rinks, and hip hop kids digging the same records. Sneakers, windbreakers and gold jewellery, Prelude and West End logos on the twelve inch sleeves.
Where and when
Boogie took shape around 1980 in New York City, USA. Tracks usually run at 105 to 120 BPM. You will also see it called electro-funk.

From the booth
Boogie is slower and leaner than disco, around 105 to 120 BPM, and it has a bounce rather than a gallop. It comes out of Post-Disco and Funk, and it points forward to Electro, Latin Freestyle and Nu-Disco.
In a set I would reach for it when the room is warm and friendly but not ready to go flat out. Pay attention to the synth bass bubbling under the groove and the space around the vocals. That space is what makes it so easy to blend. For a newcomer, a good exercise is to play boogie next to a modern nu-disco track at the same tempo. The conversation between the two will teach you a lot about groove.
