What Hi-NRG sounds like
Relentless sequenced octave bass, staccato hi hats and a hard, fast kick. Cold, shiny synth stabs and a big reverb soaked vocal, often camp and euphoric. No let up, no long breaks. Pure momentum from the first bar to the fade.
What you would see
Gay clubs and bathhouses in San Francisco and New York, then Heaven in London. Leather, moustaches, tank tops and sweat, strobe lights cutting through dry ice at three in the morning.
Where and when
Hi-NRG took shape around 1981 in San Francisco and New York City, USA. Tracks usually run at 120 to 140 BPM. You will also see it called high energy.
Family tree
It grew out of Disco. It led to Italo Disco, Chicago House, Eurodance and Hard House.
Artists to start with
Patrick Cowley, Sylvester and Bobby O.
Labels that carried it
Megatone Records (United States, 1981).

Patrick Cowley and Sylvester, Do Ya Wanna Funk (1982). It is an official upload, and you can play it on this genre’s card in the Dance Music Timeline.
Where it stands in 2026
Niche but loved in queer club nights.

From the booth
Hi-NRG is pure momentum. At 120 to 140 BPM, with sequenced octave bass and almost no breaks, it is built for the part of the night when the room wants to keep going. It came from Disco and feeds Italo Disco, Chicago House, Eurodance and Hard House.
Notice that relentless octave bass and the big, reverb soaked vocal on top. It is euphoric, a little camp and very direct. In a set I tend to play it to push the tempo up after a disco run, or to bring warmth into a harder house section. My advice for a newcomer: because there are few breaks, plan your transitions early and ride the intros. Hi-NRG does not wait for anyone.
