What Italo Disco sounds like
Drum machines, arpeggiated synth bass and melodic synth leads that sound like a space movie. Vocoder hooks and romantic English lyrics sung with a thick Italian accent. Simple, sweet and a little melancholy, big chorus after big chorus. On a floor it is instant sunshine, the record that makes a serious techno crowd grin and sing along.
What you would see
Italian discotheques and summer beach clubs, German compilation sleeves with neon type and airbrushed art. Pastel suits, sunglasses at night, lip synced TV performances.

From the booth
Italo disco is sunshine in a crate. It runs at 110 to 130 BPM and grew from Disco, Post-Disco and Hi-NRG, then fed Chicago House, Italo House, Electroclash and Synthwave. That lineage makes it very flexible in a set.
Pay attention to the arpeggiated synth bass and the melodic lead lines that feel like a film score, then the sweet, slightly awkward English vocals. It can be cheesy, and that is part of the charm. I would drop one in when a serious room needs a smile, or build a whole run of it for a late, playful hour. Try pairing it with early Chicago House; the drum machines and synth lines speak the same language.
