It drew on acid house, which itself came out of Chicago house, as well as Detroit techno and ambient house. So the two are related, just not directly. How to Hear the Difference on a Dancefloor

The rooms tell you first. Chicago house belongs to sweaty converted warehouses and lofts, a dark room and one big sound system. Trance grew up with lasers slicing smoke, fluorescent clothes and thousands of arms up at the break, first in Frankfurt clubs and then at huge raves and in Ibiza.

Then the tempo. There is a gap of about 5 BPM between the top of house and the bottom of trance, and the move from the middle of one range to the middle of the other is plus 11.1 percent.
