The first question I learned to answer without thinking about it wasn’t “what key is this in” or “who produced it.” It was “how fast is it.” When you’re standing behind the decks with ninety seconds left in a record and a room that’s finally moving, tempo is the thing that decides what happens next. Bring in something twelve BPM too fast and you’ve thrown everyone off the beat. Drop something too slow and the floor sits down. The whole craft, on some level, is tempo management. Twenty-seven years in, I still think about it this way.
So here is the practical version of that knowledge — the tempo range of the genres a working DJ actually deals with, and a tool you can play with at the bottom to feel the difference rather than just read it.
The short answer
If you want the numbers and nothing else, here they are, slow to fast:
- Hip hop / trap: 65–85 BPM (though trap is usually counted at double-time, 130–170)
- Reggaeton: 85–100 BPM
- Disco: 110–130 BPM
- House: 120–130 BPM — the genre that made 120–125 the gravitational centre of dance music
- Tech house: 125–130 BPM
- Trance: 128–140 BPM
- Techno: 130–150 BPM
- Jungle / drum and bass: 160–180 BPM, almost always sitting around 170
- Hardcore / gabber: 180–220 BPM
Everything else lives in the gaps between those. The reason house feels like the “default” tempo of a club night is that it sits right in the middle of human comfort — fast enough to move to, slow enough to stand in for hours.
Why the numbers actually matter
Genres don’t pick their tempos by accident. They’re built around what a body can do and what a particular dancefloor was for.
House landed at 120–125 because that’s the tempo of an all-night room — sustainable, hypnotic, close to a resting-to-moving heart rate. Drum and bass sits at 170 because the breakbeat at its core, the Amen break, was chopped and sped up out of hardcore rave until it hit the fastest tempo you can still find a groove inside. Push past 180 and you’re into hardcore and gabber, where the point stops being groove and becomes intensity — the kick drum turns into a wall.
This is also why mixing across genres is hard in specific, predictable ways. Going from house (124) to techno (134) is a ten-BPM nudge you can ride a long blend through. Going from house to drum and bass means either a hard cut, a halftime trick, or a track built specifically to bridge them. The tempo gap is the difficulty.

Hover any bar to hear a metronome at that tempo, sort by BPM or by genre family, and click into any genre for its key artists and where it sits in the wider range.
It’s the fastest way I know to actually feel why a 128 record and a 170 record belong to different worlds — and why the DJs who can move between them cleanly are the ones worth watching.
What this means if you’re learning
Don’t memorise a table. Internalise three anchors: 124 is house, 170 is drum and bass, 140 is the dubstep/grime/halftime crossover. Once those three live in your body, you can place almost anything else by ear relative to them. I’ve been doing this for twenty-seven years and I still navigate by those same three points.
One thing that hasn’t changed with AI tools entering the picture: the BPM. Suno and Udio generate music within the same tempo constraints every human producer has always worked within. House is still house at 122. Drum and bass is still drum and bass at 170. Some things are physics, not fashion — and tempo is one of them.
