DJing is a learnable craft with a long history. The first DJs were playing in New York loft parties in the early 1970s with two turntables and a mixer. Every technique that followed, from beatmatching to harmonic mixing to reading a room, developed out of those early sessions in specific rooms with specific crowds. The craft did not arrive fully formed. It accumulated, and it keeps accumulating.

The DJ culture and craft posts in this section cover technique, history, and the unwritten rules of DJing, from vinyl selectors through to CDJ-3000s and controller DJs. They are written from 25 years of experience across rooms in Toronto, Seoul, and everywhere in between. The full archive is part of the Culture & Scenes section.
